These days, even a teddy bear can be connected to the internet.

It's everything a kid ever dreamed of — toys that can talk back. But are internet-connected toys safe?

Robert Merkel, a father of one, is no digital purist.

He occasionally posts pictures of his nearly two-year-old daughter on Facebook, but Dr Merkel finds it difficult to recommend anyone buy a smart toy.

From board games to rubber duckies, these playthings are becoming connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and apps.

Depending on its capabilities, the toy could be recording voice messages, internet history and location data.

A doll with speech recognition, for example, is only possible thanks to sensors, microphones and online data storage.

"If it's got a microphone in it, would you be comfortable with that microphone being on in your house, potentially 24 hours a day?"

Dr Merkel, a software engineering lecturer at Monash University, is not alone in his concerns.

Earlier this year, the FBI warned US parents about the privacy and security risks posed by internet-connected toys.

What are the risks?

Smart toys are popular gifts, but an internet connection can turn a cuddly teddy bear into something creepier.

Take the case of CloudPets, an internet-connected soft toy that let adults and kids remotely record messages. In February, it was reported that a CloudPets database was publicly accessible.

The leak included emails and passwords, and voice recordings of children were also insecurely stored.

YouTube: Regulators are concerned about smart toys like My Friend Cayla and i-Que.

Take a look at the comments to see what some of our readers thought about the risks of smart toys.

No-one wants photos of their kids in the hands of strangers, and leaked information can do damage.

Details such as children's names and birthdates are often used by parents as part of their passwords, Dr Merkel says.

"When the customer databases of toy vendors get hacked, [the hackers] discover reused passwords, they discover a bunch of names they can use to try and crack more passwords."

Motivation is rather elusive, isn’t it? Some days you feel it, and other days you can’t grab a measly corner of it no matter how hard you try. You stare at the computer screen, willing yourself to type, create, develop, and instead you find yourself simply going through the motions, barely caring about the work you’re producing. Needless to say, you’re totally uninspired , and you don’t know how to make yourself feel otherwise.

, and they have real and practical solutions for digging up that lost motivation and getting a job not just done—but completed with a sense of passion. Read on for seven tips and tricks that’ll get you motivated in no time.

1. Don’t Think About it as Hard Work

There is only one way for me to motivate myself to work hard: I don’t think about it as hard work. I think about it as part of making myself into who I want to be. Once I’ve made the choice to do something, I try not to think so much about how difficult or frustrating or impossible that might be; I just think about how good it must feel to be that, or how proud I might be to have done that. Make hard look easy.

Marie Stein

Think about it: If the project you’re faced with isn’t viewed as drudgery, but rather as a piece of the puzzle that’s helping you along your career path, then perhaps the energy required to do it will be easier to come by.

There’s a reason donut holes are so lovable. They’re easy to eat. Before you know it, you’ve eaten a dozen of them. This is how goals should be too. Of course you should have a really big, audacious goal. But make sure you break down that goal into bite-sized, consumable goals. This way you’ll feel like you’re making progress in your journey and you’ll also feel a sense of accomplishment when you complete the smaller goals. A feeling of progress and achievement is a beautiful combination.

Nelson Wang

You’ve no doubt heard this advice before, but have you applied it to bead embellished ankle boots Order Cheap Online Factory Outlet Online Clearance 4wpuaa
? Completing a large project is daunting when you don’t know where to begin. How can you finish if you don’t even know where you’re starting? So, rather than focusing on a large, scary goal, take one thing at a time, and break the big goal into ideas you can digest one at a time.

NOAA has a Commissioned Service, one of the seven Uniformed Services of the United States. The NOAA Corps consists only of Commissioned Officers (i.e. no enlisted personnel or Warrant Officers). The Corps first became a Commissioned Service in 1917, during World War I, as the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey Corps. In 1965, this Corps was renamed the Environmental Science Services Administration Commissioned Corps, and in 1970, was again renamed the NOAA Corps (Source — ).

Mission: SEAMAP Bottomfish Survey Geographical Area of Cruise: Gulf of Mexico Date: June 22, 2015

Introduction

Greetings from Austin, Texas. My name is David Walker, and I will be posting here over the next couple of weeks to chronicle my participation in the second leg of the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) SEAMAP Summer Bottomfish Survey in the Gulf of Mexico. I leave for Galveston tomorrow and could not be more excited.

On a recent backpacking trip to Big Bend National Park

About Me: I am about to begin my sixth year as a high school teacher at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) in Austin, Texas. LASA is a public magnet school which draws students from the entirety of Austin Independent School District. Currently, I teach three courses — Planet Earth, Organic Chemistry, and Advanced Organic Chemistry. Planet Earth is a project-based geobiology course with a major field work component, which consists of the students completing field surveys of organisms in local Austin-area parks and preserves. Organic Chemistry is an elective course which covers the lecture and laboratory content of the first undergraduate course in organic chemistry. Advanced Organic Chemistry is an elective course framed as an independent study, in which students address the content of the second undergraduate course in organic chemistry. I also sponsor our school’s Science Olympiad team, and we compete around the nation in this science and engineering competition. This year, LASA Science Olympiad placed third in the nation, this representing the best any team from Texas has ever performed! Outside of teaching, my interests include backpacking, fly fishing, ice hockey, birding, record collecting, photography, dancing, and karaoke, in no particular order.

About Me:

About NOAA: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a scientific agency of the United States government whose mission focuses on monitoring the conditions of the ocean and the atmosphere. More specifically, NOAA defines its mission as Science, Service, and Stewardship — 1) To understand and predict changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts, 2) To share this knowledge and information with others, and 3) To conserve and manage coastal and marine ecosystems and resources. NOAA’s vision of the future consists of healthy ecosystems, communities, and economies that are resilient in the face of change [Source — Isabel Marant Étoile Ralf Suede Booties Huge Surprise Cheap Price Buy Cheap Best Wholesale Cheap Sale 100% Authentic Exclusive Sale Online J0B9F8LZWT

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in developed countries. It is a group of optic neuropathies characterized by the death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), leading to a specific deformation of the optic nerve head. Peripheral vision declines initially whilst central vision loss occurs much later. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the main risk factors in glaucoma and is currently the only target for treatment. It is not completely understood how elevated IOP leads to RGC dysfunction and death and better understanding may pave the way for the development of direct neuroprotective strategies. Several genes have been implicated in glaucoma pathogenesis and current research focusses on identifying other contributing genes. This section conducts basic research on glaucoma, understanding the underlying genetics as well developing new neuroprotective and axogenic strategies.

Our interests are concentrated on early changes in the glaucomatous retina and the optic nerve. Since it is hard to study such changes in human subjects, we use existing animal models and develop genetic rodent and zebrafish models of glaucoma for our investigations; subsequently we plan to confirm and apply our results to humans. Another main area of our research is the identification of new genes involved in glaucoma. This requires parallel studies on genes that are important for the function of the retina, the optic nerve and aqueous humor outflow system in the normal eye. We are particularly interested in genes encoding olfactomedin domain-containing proteins. Some of these proteins (Olfactomedin 1, 2 and 3) interact with the AMPA receptor complex and our investigative effects are focused on such interactions and the consequences to the physiological function of AMPA receptors in both brain and retina.

Treatments currently available for glaucoma exert their effects by reducing IOP, the most important risk factor for the onset and progression of the disease, but have no direct effects on RGCs or the optic nerve. They are not always optimally effective in slowing the progression of the disease and in a significant number of cases, glaucoma occurs independent of raised IOP. Thus, the development of novel, neuroprotective glaucoma therapies are of great importance. We are interested in investigating the potential neuroprotective benefits of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation, which has produced encouraging results in different models of CNS degeneration. We examine neuroprotective effects of several factors as well as exosomes produced by MSCs, intending not only to better understand their mechanism of action but also, subsequently apply identified protective reagents as a glaucoma treatment.

Dr. Stanislav Tomarev was awarded a Ph.D. in 1977 and a Doctor of Sciences in 1987 from the N. K. Koltzov Institute of Developmental Biology, Russian Academy of Sciences; the latter is the highest academic status degree in Russia, roughly equivalent to a full professorship. In 1989, after 15 years of research in the N. K. Koltzov Institute of Developmental Biology, Dr. Tomarev joined NEI, where he leads the Section on Retinal Ganglion Cell Biology. His laboratory investigates molecular mechanisms of glaucoma with the main focus on the genes, proteins and signaling pathways that might be essential for RGC and optic nerve development, function, survival, and regeneration.
